Lighting That Works for Your Space

Good lighting isn't just about seeing where you're going. It defines the atmosphere of every room, highlights architectural features, makes kitchens functional and bathrooms relaxing, and directly affects how spacious and inviting your home feels. Poor lighting — too harsh, too dim, wrong colour temperature — undermines even the best interior design.

We design and install lighting schemes that balance task lighting (seeing what you're doing), ambient lighting (overall room brightness), and accent lighting (highlighting features). Every installation is Part P compliant, fully tested, and designed to be energy-efficient with modern LED technology.

LED Downlights

LED downlights have replaced traditional spotlights as the default ceiling light for modern homes. They sit flush with the ceiling, provide clean directional light, and use 80% less energy than halogen equivalents. Key considerations:

  • Colour temperature: 2700K (warm white) for living spaces and bedrooms, 3000K (natural white) for kitchens and bathrooms, 4000K (cool white) for utility rooms and garages
  • IP rating: IP65 minimum for bathrooms (suitable for Zone 1 and 2)
  • Fire rating: Fire-rated downlights (30, 60, or 90-minute) are required where the ceiling forms a fire barrier — mandatory in flats and most modern homes
  • Beam angle: 36° for task lighting, 60° for general ambient light

Dimmer Circuits

Dimming transforms a room from bright task lighting to relaxed ambient mood with a single control. Modern LED dimmers are specifically designed for the lower wattages of LED lamps (using a standard leading-edge dimmer with LEDs causes flickering and buzzing). We install trailing-edge dimmers and smart dimmer switches compatible with all major LED brands.

Kitchen Lighting

Kitchens need layered lighting — a mix of ceiling downlights for general brightness, under-cabinet LED strips for worktop task lighting, and pendant lights over islands or breakfast bars for visual focus. We wire each layer to separate switches (or a single smart scene controller) so you can adjust the kitchen's mood from bright cooking mode to relaxed evening dining.

Bathroom Lighting

Bathroom lighting must comply with BS 7671 electrical zones. Zone 0 (inside the bath/shower) requires IPX7 lighting. Zone 1 (above the bath to 2.25m) requires IPX4 minimum. Zone 2 (0.6m around the bath/shower) requires IPX4. We design bathroom lighting that's fully zone-compliant while still looking great — recessed downlights, backlit mirrors, and LED shower niches.

Outdoor & Garden Lighting

Well-designed outdoor lighting extends your living space, improves security, and adds kerb appeal. We install low-voltage LED garden lighting on dedicated outdoor circuits with IP65+ rated fittings — path lights, uplighters for trees and walls, deck lights, and bollard lighting. All outdoor circuits include RCD protection and weatherproof junction boxes.

Architectural and Feature Lighting

  • LED strip lighting — coves, staircases, under-shelf, behind headboards
  • Wall washers — even illumination across feature walls and artwork
  • Recessed floor lights — hallway, bathroom, and staircase accent lighting
  • Pendant and track lighting — dining tables, kitchen islands, open-plan spaces

Smart Lighting

Smart lighting systems (Philips Hue, Lutron, Lightwave, Loxone) allow app-based control, voice commands, colour changing, scenes, and automated schedules. We install the wiring infrastructure and smart switches, and configure the system so it works reliably from day one — not a box of bulbs with an instruction manual.

Costs

  • 6x LED downlights (supply and install): £300–£500

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about this service.

In most cases, yes. Where the ceiling forms a fire barrier — between floors in a house, all ceilings in flats and apartments — fire-rated downlights are a Building Regulations requirement. They reseal the ceiling opening in the event of a fire, maintaining the barrier's integrity for 30, 60, or 90 minutes.
Yes, but they must comply with bathroom electrical zones (BS 7671). Zone 1 (above the bath to 2.25m height) requires IP44 or higher rated fittings. All bathroom lighting circuits must be RCD-protected. We only install zone-appropriate, IP-rated fittings in bathrooms.
Warm white (2700K) has a yellowish, cosy tone suited to living rooms and bedrooms. Cool white (4000K) is a bluer, more clinical light suited to utility rooms and garages. Most kitchens and bathrooms work best at 3000K — bright enough for tasks but still pleasant. Colour temperature is a personal preference, and we can install samples for you to compare.
A general rule is one downlight per 1.2–1.5 square metres for even coverage. A typical 12m² room needs 8–10 downlights. However, this varies with ceiling height, beam angle, and whether you're supplementing with other light sources. We calculate the exact layout based on your room dimensions.
